Softball Season Wrap-Up
Condor Softball's season cut short, but soaring under Coach Erin Lawley's leadership
In its COVID-19 shortened season, the Oxnard College softball team (10-7) tied the program's best win percentage: .588 from 2010 (20-14 overall). The Condors only managed one Western State Conference game – an 11-2 mercy-rule shortened five inning win over Santa Barbara Community College - before the next two were rained out before California's shelter in place began. OC was hoping to make its first post-season run in a decade with a strong roster that included sophomore veterans Miranda Guerrero (OF), Katlyn Acosta (2B/3B), and Charlie Holman (1B) leading the flock.
The Condors hit .379 as a team and outscored their opponents 140 to 81, which included six mercy-rule shortened wins. Holman led the offensive charge with a .547 clip while Guerrero slugged .491, Kim Santoyo smashed .457, and Bri Lopez and Tori Valadez hit .444 and .429 respectively. Holman also led the Condors with 29 hits while Guerrero (27), Lopez (24), Valadez (24), and Santoyo (21) followed close behind. Holman and Guerrero switched off between lead-off spots and led the scoring charge with 21 and 20 runs respectively. The speedy duo also combined for 25 stolen bases despite each missing one game to a brief injury. Valadez tallied a team-leading 10 extra-base hits, including three homers, for a .732 slugging percentage while Holman's six doubles and two triples earned her a .736 SLG.
Freshman Kayla Kern threw 80.2 innings and earned seven of OC's wins from the circle. Her 11 complete games were first in conference while her 3.04 ERA and 24 strikeouts was third in each category. Defensively, Holman has 116 putouts from first base while shortstop Lopez contributed 57 assists. Guerrero was error-less in her 16 games in center field.
Players have been engaged in regular zoom workouts with the coaching staff to keep their strength up as well as participating in individual drills at home during the shelter in place. The future is bright for the Condor softball program with several key players returning and multiple strong recruits joining the flock in the fall. Coaches and players are looking forward to getting back on the dirt and into action as soon as possible.
